Welcome to 3rd Grade!
October 2018
Please check back periodically for updates. |
Engineering is Elementary
Did you know Formula 409 got it's name from the number of prototypes/formulas it took before the team was happy with the product? 409 tries isn't so bad!
In my class, we will take the engineering approach to our learning, emphasizing effort and improvement, rather than perfection on the first try, as our goal. Thorough testing, editing, revising, working together, rethinking, checking, and that big P word-Perseverance, will be our goal in becoming the best learners we can be! |
Student Holiday Monday, Oct. 8th
Parent Conferences Tuesday, Oct. 9th
The children are continuing to learn about individual goal-setting, as well implementing those 3rd grade procedures and four agreements. The students love working in partners and groups, and we are also learning what that looks like and how to work together to be the most productive! Check out our class Dojo page for pictures from the students' partner-group research presentations. Contact Info: Feel free to reach out to me with any questions or clarifications, or to communicate changes. Email has changed! [email protected] Conference Period: 10:00-10:40 |

Strategies: number line, decomposing numbers, Standard-line up place value Problem Solving Strategy: QTIPS Q - find exactly what the specific question is asking (Underline, label with big Q) T - what kind of problem is this? what do I know about this kind of problem? I - circle the important information (amounts provided), underline what they are (39 books). Decide what information is not needed. P - pick the best plan/strategies to work this out S - solve (and check) *This process will begin to take place naturally as students continue solving multi-step word problems, but we're learning the specific steps. They will have their story-focus words in their Homework Folder to write the sentences for as homework, due Friday. Reminder students are to read 20 minutes per/night (or 100 minutes/week -- Reading homework expectation), as well as practice their math facts or other math skills for 50 minutes/week, or 10 minutes each night. Reminder: Students keep their homework folder (containing their minutes log) in their backpack for you to sign throughout the week, as well. We tell them the Homework Folder and Planner "Live in their backpack" as a way to help them remember to keep in there (so they don't forget it at home). The minutes are flexible throughout the week (if they have practice or a game, they could double up another night, or to the weekend). I check Monday mornings. Students have access to their IXL accounts online, which has modules for third grade. There are other fact-building sites they can practice with, if they have computer-online-access. They have a card in the back of their planner with their log-in username and password. They can use these resources for minutes. If students are interested in read alouds, they can visit www.storylineonline.net to hear famous people reading books. Students also have access to MackenVIA (log in info emailed). Other ideas for building fluency: read to a pet, read to a stuffy, read to little (or big) sibling or parent, or just find a comfy spot to enjoy reading to self! Class Dojo: You can find pictures from class, review of specific points for the day, and even share messages! If you haven't signed up as a parent and need that info again, or the code for your student, please let me know! Other News: Please check your email for the Parent Conferences sign up for Tuesday, Oct. 9th. See Principal's Smores' newsletter for more Caraway news and updates! We'll take Box Tops! If you have Box Tops at home, please send those in with your child! Thank you for sharing your child with me! |
